Answers to Your Most Important Questions

How do I avoid altitude sickness on Salkantay or Inca Trail? +
Altitude sickness affects many first-time visitors above 3,000m. Arrive in Cusco 2–3 days early to acclimatize. Drink plenty of coca tea and water, avoid alcohol and heavy meals initially, and consider Diamox if your doctor approves. Our treks include gradual ascents and expert guides who monitor everyone — most hikers feel great after day 1–2.
What's the difference between Salkantay Trek and Classic Inca Trail? +
Salkantay (4D) offers dramatic alpine scenery, Humantay Lake, and the 4,630m pass — no permits needed, more availability, often cheaper. Inca Trail (4D classic or 2D short) follows ancient paths with ruins and history but requires government permits (limited to 500/day, sells out months ahead). Both end at Machu Picchu sunrise. Choose Salkantay for raw nature/adventure; Inca for cultural depth.
Are permits guaranteed for Inca Trail in 2026/2027? +
Yes — we secure your spot with 100% success rate (government-licensed operator). Permits release in batches starting October each year and sell out fast, especially May–September dry season. Book 6–12 months ahead. Salkantay has no permit limits — easier to join last-minute.
What fitness level do I need? Do I have to train? +
Moderate to challenging — expect 6–10 hours walking per day with elevation gains up to 1,200m. Train 8–12 weeks ahead: hike stairs and hills 3x a week, build cardio, and practice with a backpack. No ultra-marathon level needed — our small groups go at a comfortable pace with rests and support. Most fit adults 18–65 complete it successfully.
What's included in the price and what should I pack? +
Included: professional guide, porters (fair wages), all meals, camping gear, and Machu Picchu entry + guided tour. Extras: sleeping bag (rentable), tips (~$20–30/person/day). Pack layers (rain jacket, warm hat), sturdy boots, trekking poles, sunscreen, and any personal meds. Download our free PDF packing list after booking!
When is the best time to trek and are there age restrictions? +
Dry season (May–October) for clearest views and least rain — peak months are June–August. Wet season (Nov–Apr) is quieter and cheaper but muddier. Minimum age is usually 12–14 with an adult; no strict upper limit if you are fit. We welcome all ages with medical clearance for travellers 60+.
